What is Tau Beta Pi?

It is an association and the oldest one among the engineering honor society in United States. This is also the second largest honor of collegiate in America. It recognizes and honor a student who excel and show academic excellent in the engineering field as well as his or her commitment to the integrity of the profession. The main reason why the foundation was founded because of this quotation “to mark in a fitting manner those who have conferred honor upon their Alma Mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character as students in engineering, or by their attainments as alumni in the field of engineering, and to foster a spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges.”

Brief History of Tau Beta Pi

The Phi Beta Kappa gave idea to Edward H. Williams when they have restricted their members to be exclusively only for liberal art students on Lehigh University. He formed then an honor society for those students who study technical subjects. It was Andrew Heikes that was first initiated as the first member of the association group on year 1885, 15th of June.

Through much discrimination on the religion and race, the Tau Beta Pi still made its way to start as the male-only society. Only in the year 1902 that female students on the engineering course were allowed to be an eligible member of the group. But that time, women were not granted on scholarships.  On the year 1972 the Sigma Tau was merged on tau Beta Pi that becomes the strongest honor society on engineering profession.

All the undergraduate and graduate students are allowed to join the group but the academic qualifications are the first basis. The major activities of the group are the fellowship and scholarship programs that are highly supported by their alumni and other supporters of the group.
